How can I stop Firefox's repeated use of updater.exe from making it impossible to open Firefox?

Norton continually tells me that updater.exe is safe, and whenever it does I can no longer open Firefox. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox five times and I'm losing my patience. If I cannot solve this I am going to switch to another browser. I tried to update from Firefox version 21 to version 22 and the same thing happened: after installation I could no longer open Firefox.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.
