Where did my Firefox button go? Tried turning off the menu bar but did not help. Win 7, FF 29

Also curious how such things change on my computer without my nod. I realize there are necessary background changes and other changes that my occur to operating systems and apps, but from time to my features are changed with no explanation and no apparent advantage to the person initiating the change (and without my knowledge let alone my consent).

yes, firefox will automatically update regularly - though you could disable that in the Advanced panel - Accessibility, browsing, network, updates, and other advanced settings in Firefox, i would strongly discourage you from doing so since updates generally also contain critical security fixes & the integrity of your system and your personal data on it would be at risk otherwise.

The orange Firefox button was replaced by the 3-bar Open Menu button, which is located on the right-side of the Navigation Bar.
