I cannot delete email --it says T-bird not responding

From time to time, I go through periods of time when I cannot delete my email ... it says on top "Thunderbird program not responding" & then goes blank ... either I can leave T-bird or wait for program to respond which takes a couple of minutes ...

I need help to know why it is doing this.

The most likely cause is an anti virus program misbehaving. That includes windows defender which is not always well behaved.
