Why is it that my version of Firefox (Firefox 30.0 / Lubuntu 13.10) cannot update itself?

I just updated Firefox from 33 to 36 on Windows XP Pro SP2. It took about 5 minutes. My Linux version 30 nags me about it being old and should be updated but there is no update available apart from "firefox-36.0.tar.bz2". Why can't Linux be as straightforward as Windows? This situation is extremely irritating. While I'm on the subject of irritation, there's the question of the Adobe Flash plugin. The problem even appears on the Mozilla website. Haven't you got a solution?

PS I just realised that I was using User Agent Overrider but it appears to make no difference to the question.

The Linux version from Mozilla.org does get updates like on Windows and Mac. You need to make sure the folder has read/write permissions so a easy way is have it in a folder in /home/

If you are using Firefox provided by your Linux distro then you get updates from them and not Mozilla.

Thanks for the replies. They are pretty much what I expected. Either I stick with the "out of date" distro version complete with nags, or I do an independent install of the latest version. Please consider the topic closed although I can't say that my problem has actually been solved.
