I'm trying to configure NNTP for openSUSE forums. The openSUSE forums use server nntp.opensuse.org with port 119 which I have configured properly.

When I try to subscribe to newsgroups, after some time I get error message, "Connection to Server nntp.opensuse.org timed-out" Find the Error Console Messages (Tools > Error Console) at http://paste.opensuse.org/2522190

To verify things I also tried to configure Mozilla News Newsgroup (with server as news.mozilla.org). It also failed in same manner.

NOTE: My university uses password authenticated proxy connection. I've configured it in Preferences. In fact I'm able to read emails on Thunderbird without a problem. And I'm using Thunderbird on openSUSE (GNU/Linux)

I've also posted the problem on openSUSE forums at https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/507491-Trouble-configuring-NNTP-for-forums-on-Thunderbird

Solved the problem. This was due to the proxy connection. When using nntp on a network without proxy connections I was able to add and sync the newsgroups without a single problem.
