Cannot get Ham Links add-on to load on my home page. It always was there for years. Shows up on my Add-ons Manager (not disabled), but not on the Tool Bar.
I have used this Add-on (Ham Links) for many years and it has always shown up in the "tool bar" location. Then it began to only show up after I shut off the Foxfire and then restarted it (sometimes this had to be repeated a couple of times). Now this add-on will not show up at all.....yet is is shown in my Add-ons Manager and is not Disabled/Removed. What can I do? I use this add-on almost everyday with my ham radio hobby. Thank you for your assistance. Jerry France K7LY

Hmm, I can't seem to download that, there are so many alerts about a malware distribution download site... some connection with Trovi, which is unwanted software. ??
Anyway, as you recall there were a lot of interface changes in Firefox 29, and a new method of interacting with the toolbar area was added. The old method was finally removed in Firefox 40 and extensions which were never switched from the old method to the new method are now broken.
If life without HamLinks is painfully empty, you could switch from the mainstream release of Firefox to the Extended Support Release. That ESR version is intended for corporations, but anyone can use it. It is based on Firefox 38 and will get regular security updates, but will not get the features of Firefox 39+ for at least the next six-seven months when a new ESR series launches.
If you decide to switch, here is how I suggest installing it:
Clean Reinstall
We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean (no inconsistent, corrupted, or alien code files). As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.
(A) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 38.2.1esr from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/organizations/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)
(B) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).
(C) Rename the program folder, either:
(64-bit Windows folder names)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
to
C:\Program Files (x86)\Fx40
(32-bit Windows folder names)
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
to
C:\Program Files\Fx40
(D) Run the installer you downloaded in (A). It should automatically connect to your existing settings.
Note: Some plugins may exist only in that old folder. If something essential is missing, look in these folders:
- \Fx40\Plugins
- \Fx40\browser\plugins
