Sync not working well
I have decided to start using Firefox as custom browser. Untill now I only used it now and then. With help here in the forum I installed latest version which and created a new profile located on my D partition. I imported the bookmarks from Internet explorer. All this was on My Vista desktop.
On my Vista laptop I had also installed latest version. I already had a sync account and connected both Vista and Desktop to the account.
On my Vista pc I now had a double set of bookmarks. I decided to make a new profile on the laptop. This would delete all the bookmarks there and I hoped it would then delete all bookmarks on the pc It didn't. I succeeded in repairing the bookmarks on the pc from a backup made 10 minutes before.
Both devices were connected to the sync account. The desktop had only one tab to start with. The laptop had 3. Suddenly desktop had the 3 same tabs. Nothing happened with bookmarks however.
I stopped all syncing.
SO: 1. first bookmarks from laptop were added to bookmarks on desktop so that they were double. 2. after that nothing happened with single set bookmarks on desktop and no bookmarks on laptop 3. tabs were synced from laptop to desktop : why not the other way around????

The Why is because the Sync server decided your laptop should have priority, even though the principle is Merging all data.
FF Sync is hopelessly out of the user's control - you can't select which machine should be the Master and which the Slaves, for example - and in my opinion too inconsistent and unreliable to use in its current form. Luckily it should no longer overwrite or delete data (hence why your bookmarks remained).
If bookmarks etc. fail to come through and you've reset your Sync password at any point, the reset will have messed up the encryption key for the uploaded data. That data will be unretrievable and hence won't sync. Creating and switching profiles in the interval may have done its share of the damage.

Thanks. It doesn't solve the problem but it proves that I was wise to decide not to sync anymore.
