Alt + Left (or right) click doesn't work and the help page suggests that it should "Save as."

I voted "No" to "Was this page helpful" of mouse shortcuts, because the first one I tried (Holding Alt key and left click) did nothing. Holding Alt key and right clicking did what a right click alone would do, except it closed the dialog menu before any choice could be made. On top of that, I could not go back and add "why" (other) I voted "NO" because it said "You have already voted." Sure, I voted yes/no - but I'm trying to get reliable information or describe a problem, so that was worthless.

And the page didn't even list but a few things to do with the mouse, and none of them was what I wanted to learn about when I went to the page originally.

  • I'm trying to bring up the File-Save As menu by only using the mouse, without having to reach for the keyboard - and there's no way to do that now since there's no way to navigate to the command menu with just the mouse. Your innovations are frustrating when they're taking away features!
  • As of 46.0a1 (2016-01-22), the menu bar stopped hiding, yay! Someone also pointed out that the 3 bar menu has File->Save As, as well.

Just a right click on an empty area of the page should bring up the menu.

Sure that works when all I want is "Save As" - but I'm wondering 1) why the help page suggestion doesn't work (Maybe Nightly gave up that "feature") and 2) How to get the usual "File Edit View History Bookmarks Tools Help" menu with just the mouse by itself.

Point is - if Nightly's going to hide that menu, there should be some way to get it back without having to pull out the keyboard drawer.

My question is a bug report, honestly - or "Why did you make using your browser more difficult and then break the mouse shortcuts in the process?"

Did you check the related pref on the about:config page?

  • browser.altClickSave

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Changed browser.altClickSave from default false to user true, but 46.0a1 (2016-01-20) just has the same behavior - Alt (left) click does nothing, while Alt right click flashes the right click menu then closes it.

But that's really not the issue, and even if it was, the problem with any solution involving changing settings is that the help page says it should work by default.

The real reason I went to the "Mouse shortcuts" help page was to find out how to get the "File Edit View History Bookmarks Tools Help" back again by using the mouse (as opposed to hitting the Alt key to bring it back). The "File Edit View History Bookmarks Tools Help" menu disappearing to save all of 20 pixels of vertical space is awesome, except that there's no way to get it back without pulling the keyboard tray out to get to the keyboard, or reach in there and poke around until I find the Alt key. If it's going to auto-hide, it should auto-appear somehow, too.

browser.altClickSave is about holding Alt key when you want to save a link on a web page instead of opening in a tab.

There is a "Save Page As" button in the "3-bar" menu button drop-down list, so you do not need to use the File mwenu. If you use "Save Page As" often then you can consider to move this button the the Navigation Toolbar.

The menu bar would normally appear if you hold the Alt key or press F10 unless you are in Full Screen mode.

You can use one of these to leave Full Screen mode:

  • press the F11 key
  • click the Maximize button at the right end of the Tab bar
  • click the Full Screen button in the "3-bar" menu button drop-down list
  • right-click empty space on a toolbar and click "Exit Full Screen Mode"

I like the new 3-bar menu, and Save Page is prominently included there. Save Page is available many different ways by default, including keystroke shortcuts. If the menu bar could be revealed or accessed by the 3-bar menu, or all options in the menu bar were available there in the 3-bar menu, I would find that agreeable.

That there are many ways to get the "menu bar" back is great! I appreciate it being documented. In 46.0a1 (2016-01-21), the Alt-left and right clicks do nothing useful. The Alt right click actually looks glitchy.

The issue as written here is that those two things do not work currently - and the help page suggests they should. So, it's "broken." The issue that motivated me to point that out is that the menu bar is being hidden now, and requires keystrokes (where previously you could get to them via mouse-only) to access.

Both problems are unsolved so far in the latest version, but I appreciate the advice and information provided by everyone who responded. Thank you! I'll try mentioning the interface changes in the pre-release forum area.

I unplugged my graphics tablet and checked my Control Panel -> Mouse settings as someone suggested, but everything was set default, so I'm not sure what causes the strange Alt Right Click flicker.
