I am trying to change my default settings so that the extra line does not happen. Where do I find Tools/Options/Composition.

Do not know where to find the Tools/Options/Composition for Mozilla email. I have tried the Tools in the "Write screen" but cannot find the place to uncheck "when using paragraph format......" Do I do this somewhere other than when I am in Mozilla email? Please help....this is very frustrating.

At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button > Options > Composition > General.

Uncheck 'When using paragraph format ...'.
