random character symbols and diacritical symbols often appear in body of email that were forwarded to me--usually in the place of regular punctuation, like an apostrophe.

Type about:preferences#content<enter> in the address bar. Across from fonts and colors, press the Advanced button. On the bottom, turn on Allow Web Sites To Choose Their Own.

Make sure that you have selected the correct encoding (UTF-8).

FredMcD - thanks for responding, but i don't know what "address bar" you're referring to. cor-el - thanks for responding, but i don't see (UTF-8) after any of the options under "Text Encoding" under "View" - i do have it set on "Wstern", as opposed to "unicode" also, i noticed this forum appears in "Firefox" Support Forum and my problem is occurring in Thunderbird, which i use for emails. is there a different forum dealing with Thunderbird issues?

You can try to select Unicode and not Western to see if that has effect.

cor-el - actually, i was in the wrong place looking for "UTF-8" - i was under "View" instead of "Tools"-"Options"-"Display"-"Advanced"-"Text Encoding"-"Incoming Mail"- where i found the "(UTF-8) option. i clicked on it and seems to have worked. Thanks!

You're welcome.

When you select a Windows or Western encoding and the content is Unicode then you see the separate bytes instead of the real character and that can be a capital 'A' with some accent above it.
