My New Tab page used to show images in the tiles for all the sites on the page. After the cache was deleted while working on solving a different problem, the images for the tiles all disappeared. I've followed all the suggestions at this page: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/thumbnails-new-tab-page-missing-how-get-them-back?cache=no#firefox:win10:fx52 numerous times, and for almost all of them, I can't get them back. There are one or two that have reappeared, and new web sites that show up on the page have images on their tiles, but nothing that was suggested works to get the old images back. Help please!

Hi, images on tiles for some secure sites won't appear - even though they did in the past, so clearing the cache will have removed them.

You could try bookmarking the site, then drag the bookmark to the New Tab page - Customize your Firefox New Tab page. You might then need to click on the tile to make the image appear; also restart FF.

You could also try https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-tools/

If your question is resolved by this or another answer, please take a minute to let us know. Thank you!

Thanks for your suggestions. I already had tried everything but the New Tab Tool add-on, which I have now downloaded. But I can't seem to make it work for bringing in images for the tiles. I tried to put in a url for an image - no dice. So I saved an image file and then after putting in the url for the tile, found the image file using 'browse' and clicked on SET. Nothing happened. Tried creating a new tile with an image the same way - nothing, Not even for teh tiles that DID have an image before I installed the extension, which wiped out the existing tile images. Not sure what to try next - new add-on seems like it would be perfect but I can't make it do what I think it's trying to do. It will add new tiles but not the image. The images I saved as files were logos that I saved off the web site I want the tile for, so it was just a png file with their logo. The add-on did allow me to edit the title of the tile, change the size of the title font, change the number of tiles on the desktop (change the grid size), but not mess with the images. Any other suggestions?

OK, let's try Refresh. Since it can very occasionally cause issues of its own - to be on the safe side, before you do it, I would backup your bookmarks: Open bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import and Backup > Backup. Or, Export Bookmarks to HTML, and save them to somewhere convenient on your computer. Note that Backup will overwrite any existing bookmarks when you restore them. For extra safety, I'd suggest making both a Backup - which creates a JSON file, and an HTML file. You can instead backup all your data by copying your Profile, but this requires some technical expertise - Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.

The Refresh feature (called "Reset" in older Firefox versions) can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your bookmarks, history, passwords, cookies, and other essential information.

Note: When you use this feature, you will lose any extensions, toolbar customizations, and some preferences. See the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article for more information. You might want to make a note of your add-ons first.

To Refresh Firefox:

  1. Open the Troubleshooting Information page using one of these methods:
    • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click help Help-29 and select Troubleshooting Information. A new tab containing your troubleshooting information should open.
    • If you're unable to access the Help menu, type about:support in your address bar to bring up the Troubleshooting Information page.
  2. At the top right corner of the page, you should see a button that says "Refresh Firefox" ("Reset Firefox" in older Firefox versions). Click on it.
  3. Firefox will close. After the refresh process is completed, Firefox will show a window with the information that is imported.
  4. Click Finish and Firefox will reopen.
