gmail downloads all old messages every time (win7)

Every time that I access my gmail account, 'all mail' folder' TB downloads all 8000 messages. despite the settings for the account. Thunderbird 52.1.1, Windows 7, gmail account set up as IMAP, sycnch set to most recent 3 days and deletion policy set to delete all messages older than 400 days old.

I'm stuck figuring out how to stop it doing this - any sugegstions very welcome! Thanks, Bryan
