I have been using Thunderbird for many years. Yesterday it was working perfectly. Today it is VERY, VERY slow. It takes 5 seconds to delete a message and another 5 seconds to load a message. The colored ball using comes up. I am running Thunderbird 52.5.0 (since Dec 4) on my iMac, which is running 10.13.1 High Sierra (since Nov 5). Restarting Thunderbird or restarting my iMac doesn't help. Thanks for your help!

Start Mac in safe mode.

Still in Mac safe mode, start thunderbird in safe mode - https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird

Does problem go away? Please reply to let us know results.

I started my iMac in safe mode, and then started Thunderbird in safe mode. The problem goes away. I then restarted everything in normal mode.

In normal mode, using Activity Monitor on my iMac I see that every time I select or delete a message in Thunderbird (and encounter a very long delay in the operation), that a program called SAVAPI takes up 100-150% of the CPU. This program seems to be used by the Avira anti-virus program I am using. See https://oem.avira.com/en/products/savapi.

I did a "force quit" on the Process SAVAPI in Activity Monitor, but the problem remains. I still get the long delay in Thunderbird and see SAVAPI taking 100-150% of the CPU.

I have used Thunderbird and Avira together for many months. Then all of a sudden I have this problem with Thunderbird and SAVAPI. Do you have any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

Thanks for your help.

Ron

You need to adjust Avira or remove it so that it doesn't cause a problem. See https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues at "Avira antivirus"
