Can receive emails but cannot send
No problem for years, now get the attached error message when starting Send. I have altered my SMTP settings to every available security, authorisation and port possibility including no authentication, normal password and OAuth2. Nothing works; always the same error message. My ISP is U W Club (uwclub.net). I can send as U W Club webmail so they advise that the problem is a Thunderbird problem sending from Thunderbird to their server. I've tried their server as smtp.uwclub.net, which has worked for years, and also mail.uwclub.net which they also advise is their server address.
Current SMTP settings are form me XXXXXXXXX@uwclub.net . smtp.uwclub.net Port 587 (default 587), STARTTLS, Normal password.

Their recommended settings are:
incoming server: mail.uwclub.net port: 993 for POP, 995 for IMAP Connection security: SSL/TLS Authentication: normal password User name: email address
outgoing server: mail.uwclub.net port: 465 for SSL/TLS or 587 for STARTTLS Connection security: SSL/TLS or STARTTLS Authentication: normal password User name: email address
As I reported, these standard setting DO NOT WORK - that's why I have a problem.
As I also reported it makes no difference whether the server name is mail.uwclub.net or smtp.uwclub.net.
The settings reported in your first post show you're using pop3.uwclub.net on port 110 with STARTTLS security. If that works for you, then keep it. For the outgoing server, try port 465 and SSL/TLS security. If you still get an error, report the exact wording of the error message.
Port 465 for SSL/TLS didn't work either.
The error message for all settings tried is: Send Message Error Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.uwclub.net for an unknown reason. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again".
(1. As I explained, using mail.uwclub.net does work either; if I do I get the same error message but referring to mail.uwclub.net. 2. Apologies. Initially I attempted to provide the error message in a docx file together with the troubleshooting data but it was impossible to attach that information as a docx file or as a pdf file. Weird. When I included the troubleshooting information in the question (no other way) I forgot to add in the error message).
If the problem began suddenly after previously working, it suggests that something on your system changed to cause it. Look at what programs you have running at computer startup, especially security programs. To rule out any 3rd-party interference with TB, start the computer in OSX safe mode, then run TB and see if the problem persists.
Didn't actually solve the problem but it gave a clue. Thanks for the helpful suggestion of trying Tbird in Mac Safe Mode. The problem remains but this seems to have revealed a fundamental Tbird problem that seems to affect only message sending in normal operation.
1. After booting Mac in OSX Safe Mode Tbird is unusable. It is zoomed to about 400% and shows a fixed random part of the folders list; no toolbar header. No slider function to scroll folders. Mac top menu View> Zoom> shows zoom options greyed out. Starting a test send (Command + N) opens a blank page with no addressee or subject header. Word operates OK, browsers operate OK, and no Mac errors reported during Safe Mode boot-up check process. This indicates some problem in Tbird.
(I had uninstalled Tbird several days ago and re-installed the earlier version 52.4.0 but the Send problem remained).
2. Still in OSX Safe Mode. Uninstalled Tbird, downloaded and reinstalled Tbird current 52.6.0. Same problem situation as in 1 above.
3. Re-booted Mac to normal operation. Tbird all normal and OK except only the Send problem.
4. Re-opened Tbird in Tbird Safe Mode (Help> re-start with add-ons disabled). Tbird confirmed in Safe Mode. Attempted email Send: same error message.
