some addons like importexporttools does not seem to update automatically, even not when you do the menu function tools->addons:"check for updates"

to update manually must I first remove the current addon then download the latest version and import the latest addon version in thinderbird?

'Check for updates' may not work if a newer version of an add-on hasn't been reviewed by TB for public release.

Unless the add-on specifies it, it's not necessary to remove the current add-on - just install the latest version. For ImportExportTools, the latest version is 3.3.2:
