Last night Firefox updated automatically and the new version requires signing in to the Firefox account to transfer any passwords, bookmarks, and history. Of course my password for Firefox is in the Firefox passwords folder. If I reset the password my data will be destroyed for "security reasons." I have important passwords and bookmarks that will cost me days of time to replace and some that can never be replaced. Is there some way to get this data back? Why was there no warning that this was going to happen? I now find that there is a process to protect the old data after it is too late to use it. What idiot implemented this system without telling the users it was going to happen and how to make sure their data wasn't lost?

Firefox does keep your information when you update. It won't require you to sign in.

What it sounds like has happen is that Firefox thinks that the update is a brand new installation. It's not what's supposed to happen when you update, but it does happen from time to time. In that case, it made a new blank copy of the profile folder (where your data is stored). Fortunately, this issue is quite easy to solve.

See Recover user data missing after Firefox update for more information.

Hope this helps.
