TB 78 has been such a disappointment and step backwards for me. From losing the ability to decrypt emails permanently via Enigmail and losing my add-ons, email is now (in 78) a chore.

I downloaded "//ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/68.9.0/mac/en-US/", but wanted to ask if installing this over 78 will screw up TB or if there's something I need to do first.

I really want to get back to Engimail and my add-ons so email works how I need it to. One reason I stuck with TB is that I can save my decrypted emails permanently so I can actually search them without having to manually look at each one.

Thanks in advance,

You will need to run a command to allow you to downgrade - below instructions for windows OS but I don't know what exactly you need to do on MAC (what should be "before" the command):

On the last step of the installation do NOT select to start TB. If you miss this step then on the error that appears ref profile click Exit! Then launch TB with this command (for windows OS): thunderbird --allow-downgrade For your specific case --allow-downgrade command must be after something else... :(

After that all your data should be there except email addresses from the address book.

To add also those email addresses back follow below steps: At the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button (or use the regular menu at the top), then select Help: Troubleshooting Information. Click on Open Folder (if you have multiple options click on the one on the profile zone). Close TB. On the folder opened by TB - you will find the old files which manage that information with extension .mab.bak - those files (abook and history) you need to: -rename them to .mab (so delete the .bak) -so you can do that rename you will need the files with same name/extension already in that folder to move them to desktop? or anywhere else -also move to desktop abook.sqlite and history.sqlite Start TB

Whilst you still have 78 installed, make sure you change settings to not auto update but to ask, so you have option to not update. Menu app icon > Preferences > General Scroll down to Updates section. Select checkbox: 'check for updates but let me choose whether to install them' uncheck : Use a background service to install updates'

Version 68.12.0 was the last in the 68 series. http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/68.12.0/mac/en-US/ Downgrade protection can be overridden by launching Thunderbird through the command line with the --allow-downgrade parameter.

use the terminal and type: /Applications/Thunderbird.app/Contents/MacOS/thunderbird-bin -profilemanager --allow-downgrade

note there is a space before and after -profilemanager

Thanks. I posted another question rather than replying to this one.
