Internet Explorer keeps braking in when I don't want them. Very irritating. What can I do to stop this brake in?

I am not any web site, but on line, and suddenly Internet Explorer pops up with a different advertisement every time. Then they say page can not be connected. This happens quite frequently when I am not doing anything on the computer. It gets very irritating when I am working on a document to just print out and not email. Then when I am quietly listening to music, another Internet Explorer ad pops up with a talking video. What can I do to eliminate Internet Explorer?....Thanks.....Terry
