Firefox often freezes and will not close; also cannot open bookmarks

After operating normally for a few minutes firefox freezes and will not allow me to open legitimate pop-ups or access another website. At the same time my bookmarks folder will not open.

Which security software (firewall) do you have?

Did you check the Firefox rules and make sure that is doesn't block Firefox?

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
