After updating to firefox 4 , I noticed that yslow was outputting a number of javascript-related errors.

So I tried to disable it, but was unsuccessful.

In my addons screen it says "YSlow has been remove .. Restart Now ..." but no matter how many times I restart it remains in my addon bar and in the addons screen and keeps producing the errors.

I have also rebooted my computer.

This can be a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.

Delete the files extensions.* (extensions.sqlite, extensions.rdf, extensions.cache, extensions.ini) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.
New files will be created when required.

See "Corrupt extension files": http://kb.mozillazine.org/Unable_to_install_themes_or_extensions

If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the "Find Updates" button (Firefox 4: click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar) to do a compatibility check.

Go to Tools | Add-ons | Extensions and see if you can see it there. If it is, click "Remove".

That is what I described in my OP.

On the extensions page it shows up as removed.. but is stuck or something.

Image attached.

Clicking the restart link as no effect. 'Undo' also has no effect.

Do you have Firebug installed? Yslow won't work without it. Maybe that's the source of the problem.

Try having a look for the problem on the Yahoo support site for it: http://developer.yahoo.com/yslow/

I do have firebug installed. Also, I'm not trying to get YSlow to work, I'm trying to remove it altogether. Thanks for looking into this BTW.

Try starting Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode by clicking Help | Restart with add-ons disabled.

Click the Continue without making changes button and then go to Tools | Add-ons | Extensions again and see if you can remove it that way.

Restarted in safe mode. Went to the extensions screen. All addons were disabled. YSlow was in the list. It looked the same as the above screenshot. I clicked the 'restart now' link. The browser restarted (this time in regular mode). YSlow is still in the extensions list and in my addon bar.

OK, press CTRL+SHIFT+DEL, change the top option to Everything and in the bottom menu, checkmark Cache (uncheck all the others). Then click Clear Now.

Then go to Tools | Options | Advanced and in the Network tab | Offline Storage menu, click Clear Now.

Then go to Tools | Options | Privacy, click Show Cookies button and delete the cookies for Yahoo and Yslow if it's there.

Followed the above instructions. Opted to clear ALL cookies just to be sure. YSlow still in extensions menu. Tried again to click 'Restart now' and it is still in the list.

It is looking like I will need to completely remove and reinstall FF. Do you have any suggestions on how best to backup bookmarks/preferences/etc.?

Worked like a charm cor-el. Thanks for helping resolve this frustrating issue.

And a ++ for Xircal for helping rule out all the basic stuff.
