new tab stops working in firefox 5.0

I'm using firefox 5.0, when i start it it all works normally but at random times the new tab funtion stops working, i have no toolbars installed and if i got to file/newtab it is greyed out, any ideas what i can do as its very annoying having to restart firefox serval times a day ive seen "solutions" that blame various toolbars but ive got none installed and ive un installed and reinstalled firefox but it doesnt fix the problem,

Which extensions do you have installed?

Are you using the default theme or a custom theme?

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
