I recently went away for a few days--left the computer running but closed Firefox. Turns out I was still logged into Hotmail the whole time, resulting in 1.5G/day of unauthorized surplus bandwidth use and a dozen or more unauthorized e-mails/spam from the Hotmail acct. (I have Norton Anti-Virus 2011, but I believe that this was backdoor hijacking of my PC via the open Hotmail account.).

Are you using session restore to reopen tabs automatically the next time?

You can set the pref browser.sessionstore.privacy_level to 2 (never) or 1 (non-HTTPS, default in Firefox 3 versions) on the about:config page to disable saving cookies via session restore.
