Can't play .rm files.

110907 - 6.0.2 installed. And FF still can't handle rm files.  :-(

The plugin container does not handle Real media. You need to add a setting to about:config to exclude the plugin container from trying to handle Real Player plugins.

dom.ipc.plugins.enabled.i386.nppl3260.dll - set to false

You can also set Firefox to use the Real Player application to handle Real media instead of the plugin. That works sometimes.

Re my above question/complaint.

  • I have a number of Real embeds columned on one specific page (which used to work in the past) and visible as Play buttons. Page: http://www.jjvanka.net/mulinks.html
  • When the plugin has crashed, these buttons are gone. However, sometimes it happens that one or more appear nonetheless and actually work. How is this possible?

Thanks Finitarry, but your suggestion re nppl3260 doesn't work, unfortunately. Studying the RealPlayer article I realized that my site visitors may experience the same difficulties and unless they are pc-literate they are unable to play my Real files. So, I should convert all .rm files to .mp3 or something.  :-(

For the time being I switched off the container on my own machine (dom.ipc.plugins.enabled;false) and will try this out for a while. So far it works fine. I might advise visitors to do the switch-off too (or move to MSIE which doesn't have this problem).

There is another Real Media plugin that gets installed, but I forget its name, since I am no longer using Windows, and I was unable to find references to both.

Some time ago I saw that among the FF plugins for Real a number of versions specifically for Netscape were installed; these might be the ones you remember.

The 'G2 LiveConnect' is the only RealMedia plugin I use now. It has not crashed since I disabled the FF plugin container, so this was definitely the solution for my .ram/rm problem. If disabling the container causes other probs, I haven't noticed (yet). On behalf of my visitors I inserted a 'how to' link -- http://www.technogadge.com/stop-plugin-container-in-firefox-4/ -- which is also applicable for FF7.

If something comes up, I'll be back. Rgds - JJ

Have you tried switching off the 'plugin container'? It solved my problem definitely.
