I recently reinstalled Ubuntu on my laptop and now I'm trying to reconnect Firefox Sync. I have my username, password and key...but it's a freetext key from Sync 1.5. Is there a way to convert this key to the bunch-of-letters-and-numbers system?

My account was synced to one other computer, which I should be able to access if necessary, but I'm hoping that there's a way to link my old key with the new one. Is that possible? (I was thinking that there might be some kind of algorithm).

Did you try to use that old key to see if the Sync server updates it automatically.
You may have to install an old Sync version to make that work.

When the Firefox Sync system was changed over to the Sync Key in Dec 2010 (from the "create your own" key), my initial Sync account automatically received a Sync Key to replace the one I had created when I set up that account - I didn't have to do anything.

Take a look that that other computer - Preferences > Sync -> Manage Account --> My Sync Key
