I received a pop-up message purporting to be from Firefox that said version 9.0.1 needed an immediate download for safety etc. Doesn't seem legit but I wanted to check.

I just received a message purporting to be from Firefox and telling me that version 9.0.1 needed an immediate download for safety etc. and had a link to click on. Of course I did not click on the link because I had no idea where the link would send me, so I thought the best place to look would be here. I'm betting it's not legit, so you should know about it since they are using your name. If it IS legit, you really ought to change the wording on that pop up on, and you should show a web address and not just say "click here".

You appear to be using Firefox 8.0

Firefox 8.0.1, 9.0.1 and now 9.0.1 have since been released by Mozilla.

Firefox 9.0.1 is the current release at http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/fx/

Thanks, James, for pointing that out! I have now upgraded.

However, that also implies that the message I got was, oh, I don't know what you'd call it, I'm obviously not very tech savvy! but anyway a forgery or something. After all, it presumed that I was already running version 9.0.1 which was certainly not the case at the time. So that's all, it is just a concern if someone is sending out mystery links from "Firefox". All I knew was that the wording seemed a little bit off. It probably wasn't a big deal but you never know. It's pretty clear there is no "emergency" update to 9.0.1. Which just leaves me wondering where the message came from, or if other people should be aware of it, etc.
