I keep getting e-mails with the heading "sponsorship" -- offers to download stuff. I want to block this. How to do it?

My sense is that lots of Firefox users have this question. The answer is NOT parental controls.

It seems to me there used to be a tab one could click: spam.

Hi firefox is not causing this, its your email provider's fault for not blocking it as spam.
