undo delete message ctrl z in edit menu no longer works. If I delete a message i cannot get it back anymore all of a sudden ?

Also.. when we add a new folder, is it not possible to see this in the add to or copy to list, when we want to put an email into this newly created folder.. obviously, if we have just created a new folder, we will want to use it right away..

I figured it out .. my deleted messages folder was quite full. As soon as I emptied it the undelete message function returned working again.. Thanks anyway..

I had origiannly also asked this too though.. "Also.. when we add a new folder, is it not possible to see this in the add to or copy to list, when we want to put an email into this newly created folder.. obviously, if we have just created a new folder, we will want to use it right away." ?

re: 'when we add a new folder'

If this is an IMAP mail account, have you subscribed to see the new folder?

re: 'delete message'

If this is an IMAP mail account, there are different methods for deleting. Choices are "Move it to the Trash folder", "Mark it as deleted" and "Remove it immediately". Check the setting you are using. More info here:

Thanks for your reply Toad-Hall, but my issue is that the "UN-delete" function no longer works.. I already know how to "delete" and am able to "delete"..it's getting the mistakenly deleted email messages back again with ctrl z, that no longer works..(as written above).. as it did up to a few weeks ago.. I don't even know what an IMAP account is.. but this is just a regular Mozilla Thinderbird email account on my PC.. It just stopped working of it's own accord !?

'Tools' > 'Account Settings' > 'Server Settings' for the mail account

at the top it will say whether it is a Pop or IMAP mail account.

The reason I ask about IMAP or POP is because:

1. If IMAP you would need to subscribe to see a folder after creating it.

2. I'm trying to work out what settings you used to delete. For example if you use a setting that deleted and compacted, then that email will be gone and so undeleting will not work. So I would then need to know what delete settings are used as there is more than one method for IMAP accounts.

Tools -> Account Settings -> Server Settings

  • "When I delete a message" has choices for:
  • "Move it to the Trash folder"
  • "Mark it as deleted"
  • "Remove it immediately".

What setting do you have?

HI Toad-Hall Please see attached screenshot of my server settings, which I have not changed at all in order to make the un-delete stop working.. as it always used to..until it stopped working a few weeks ago of it's own accord.. I can not see the options that you list regarding "When I delete a message"... ?

Thanks..

Ctrl + Z is undo, not undelete.

You have a Pop mail account.

If you delete an email, you should be able to immediately: 'Edit' > 'Undo Delete Message' and message will be undeleted and returned to where it was prior to deleting.

If it only says: 'Edit' > 'Undo'

this is not an undo delete message, so it will not work.

on my Thunderbird program Ctrl + Z is undo delete message... it no longer works..

Yes Ctrl+Z can undo delete message, but only if it says 'Edit' > 'Undo Delete Message' is shown in toolbar, so does it actually say this in the toolbar?

What version of Thunderbird are you using?

more options

YES... 'Edit' > 'Undo Delete Message' is shown in toolbar.. as I already mentioned.. it used to work fine for the last 2 years.. it just stopped working a few weeks ago..if I click 'Edit' > 'Undo Delete Message' ..the deleted message no longer returns to the folder where it was..

Thunderbird Version 24.5.0

So do you have any idea what I can do about this to make it work again ? Thank you

Can you move emails from deleted to another folder?

Can you see if an addon is causing a conflict.

  • Help > Restart with addons disabled

If it works in Safe Mode then an addon is causing a conflict, so gradually enable addons to see which one it is and report back on results.

I have just updated my version to be the same as yours and tested a new folder created in the account and as a sub folder, I can immediaitely see the folder in the right click move to functionality and also via the toolbar. So this functionality is available, but for some reason you are not seeing it.

In a previous response on this topic, I asked if you could check to see if there was a conflict with any addon by running Thunderbird in Safe mode accessed via Help > Restart with addons disabled. What, if any, effect did this have?

If no effect, I would uninstall the version you are using via Control Panel > Programs and Features and then install a fresh download, Thunderbird does not keep the Thunderbird Program in the same place as the Thunderbird Profile, so uninstalling should not effect your emails, however, it is always a good idea to create a backup of the Profile folder.
