What causes Thunderbird to use more than 50% of cpu?
Much of the time Activity monitor shows Thunderbird using above 50 % of the cpu, sometimes 100%. All other activity pauses, and I get the "Spinning Beach Ball" so familiar to MAC users.
I have adjusted the "get messages" setting for my accounts to avoid simultaneous access and to try to reduce the cpu peaks. Are there any other suggestions?

Do you use McAFee ?
Do you have large files?
If yes, consider organising mail into suitable folders and Archiving older emails.
If you have an IMAP gmail account, do you see the 'All Mail' folder?
If yes, this is gmails archive of all of your emails, so it is only doubling all the emails and disc space. It is advised that you unsubscribe from seeing this folder. More info here - scroll down to 'All Mail' section:
