I have Google as my home page. When I click the + button to open a new tab, it doesn't load my home page.

Only a new window opens with the home page.

A new tab opens with the page that is set in the browser.newtab.url pref. See this article about the New Tab page (about:newtab):

Thanks Can't quite seem to get it right, but almost! Changing the url to about:home makes it load up google when I open a new tab, but it doesn't put the cursor in the google search box so you have to search from the addess bar or click the google search box. I know this sounds pedantic but the address bar seems to be easily affected by addware, etc so I don't lilke to search from there. I know it's only one extra click/movement of the mouse, but it just seems daft to me that you can set a home page but then not replicate this action with a new tab.

If you use the about:home page for the new tab then the cursor should be in the search bar on that page and not in the location/address bar. For a search form on a web page this may not work properly, but with the built-in about:home and about:newtab pages this should work.

If that isn't the case then check for issues caused by an extension.

It is in the search bar, but I want it in the search box - the one on the middle of the screen in the google home page.

If I could add 4 tabspaces to the command to automatically tab to the correct place it would work!!

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for what you want.

There are several add-ons that can help you.
