Thunderbird is repeatedly crashing and I cannot access downloaded emails. Latest version. What can I do to fix this?

Since yesterday I have been unable to access my emails in Thunderbird. Every time I try to open the program (on iMac OS X 10.9.5), it crashes repeatedly. It seems to manage to send a crash report each time. Just now I was able to read one email before it crashed but usually it doesn't even get that far. Please help! I have so much of my life stored in there and I need to be able to regain access.
