Is there a way to search for specific terms instead of variations?

I did a search for the term "AVS" and it returned every email containing an address with "Ave." in it. That is NOT what I searched for. I did another search for the word "converter", and it returned results containing "convert", "converted", etc. — i.e., variations of my search term. That is NOT what I searched for. Putting the term in quotes does not help. Surely there is a way around this? Can I disable spell-checking and suggestions?

Okay, so there's a separate search dialog that I did not know about. It's the quick search at the top-right that has this problem, and that's the one I prefer using because it's terribly convenient. Thank you for pointing that out, though, Gnospen. It gives me a way to find what I need, with some extra work.
