why can't i see chinese in my email?

I am an English user of thunderbird but occasionally I receive emails with Chinese language. If I log in to my email web server the Chinese shows correctly. But using thunderbird It shows up as gibberish like ÎÒ½K춫@Ñû®”ÈýÃ÷ÖÎÁË£¿Œ†á£¿¸ÐÖxÓЗ«Éí֮̎ÁË¡£. Is there a way to fix this?

How have you set the Character Encoding from the view menu? I think you have to change that to recognize more than one type of alphabet.
