Most every day I log into Schwab.com. Starting about a week ago, the login page will not load. I only get a blank page. It works if I clear the schwab cookies. Then doesn't work next time. It is fine in IE. Very inconvenient. Any ideas why this started to happen? Can I fix it or is at Mozilla or the Schwab end?

Thanks for any insights.

My Firefox did an autoupdate just a bit ago and the problem with the Schwab page disappeared. I believe whatever changed two updates ago was modified to accommodate the situation. I know Schwab was looking into it so it is also possible they changed something in their home page. In any case, problem resolved!

Schwab got back to me and said they know their home page will not work with Firefox. There were no specifics about the issue. At least one other Schwab page does not load. I figure it is the same problem. I was given an alternative way to log in so the worst is over but I am not thrilled with the advice to quit using Firefox. Does anyone wish to pursue this?

Thank you for the update. If they are not interested in supporting Firefox, it could be difficult to get enough specific information to fix the problem...

I wonder whether any of the cookies relate to connection parameters? Some sites are designed to block session hijacking by keeping track of various connection details and forcing a new logon if they change. A blank page is not usually part of the deal, so perhaps this is not related to that issue, but it's difficult to guess what else might be the problem. I suppose if we could narrow it down to a particular cookie and figure out what was in that cookie or how the server is using it, then we would be in a better position to solve the mystery.

Clear the cache and remove cookies only from websites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Cached Web Content: "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Firefox/Tools > Options > Privacy > "Use custom settings for history" > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

If clearing cookies didn't help then it is possible that the cookies.sqlite file that stores the cookies got corrupted.

  • Rename (or delete) cookies.sqlite (cookies.sqlite.old) and if present delete cookies.sqlite-shm and cookies.sqlite-wal in the Firefox profile folder in case the file cookies.sqlite got corrupted.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.

  • Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
  • Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window
