Help! I can't even understand that ridiculous tutorial. Chrome CSS? I am not a technical person and I think it is awful that Firefox blatantly changes this stuff around. I am moving to Chrome if I can't get this fixed. I am looking for an easy fix to get my tabs back on the bottom. How come there isn't a fix in about: config like they're used to be?

We should not have to implement these fixes; please just provide an addon as before.

I looked at this tutorial, and it might as well be Greek...I can't understand at all what to do. Can't Mozilla just offer the ability to change this via about:config as they did in the past? This is really infuriating...putting the tabs on top has nothing to do with security or stability and should be an easily selected user option. C'mon Mozilla, is this really too much to ask?

Update: I've reverted to 56, and won't go to 57 till Mozilla / Firefox offers an easy way to select Tabs on Bottom. Should be a straightforward thing to do, without having to learn a bunch of code. If I wanted to write code, I'd become a programmer. I like Firefox, but taking away user options for no good reason just infuriates people, and pushes us not to update, which is obviously not good from a security standpoint. Please Mozilla, fix this.

Not sure why Mozilla wants to do this. Any layout artist would say that tabs on top results in a cluttered, difficult to use, workspace. This behaviour is just stubborn and provides no discernable advantage. Even moving the tabs to the bottom of the screen is better than this.

I agree with chbrownie18...this seems just arbitrary, and very frustrating. I navigate with Tabs far more frequently than with Bookmarks, and want them just above the open window where I can get to them easily. Having them on top makes the workspace more awkward, and (for me), less user-friendly.

I recognize that some developer might have thought this was preferable, but at the very least, recognize that others might feel differently and give them (us) the option of a organizing our own workspace the way we like.

Does anyone at Mozilla read these posts?

How do I revert back to version 56? I am really irritated that I cannot get my tabs back to below the bar. It is crowded with the tabs on top, there aren't any clear instructions on how to fix this. I am really disgusted and my one seeing eye is having great difficulty with this change. If there is anyone who can help all of us with this, please do.

Wellfleetian: No, I don't think anyone reads these replies, or simply doesn't care. I also utilize the tabs far more than bookmarks and this just isn't working for me. I take a little comfort in that it is just as cumbersome for several of us, and it shouldn't be such a big deal for Mozilla to help us out.

I downloaded it and reinstalled Firefox...all was good: bookmarks, profile, saved logins, and tabs where I wanted them.

Worked for me, and I'll stick with this version for now. May check back occasionally to see if anyone comes up with a way to have both 57 and tabs below the bookmarks.

Oh my gosh! Wellfleetian! I feel indebted to you for bringing balance back to my universe! Indeed, it all went back perfectly for me and I, too, will stick with this version for now. I thank you so very, much!

I might check back here, too, to see if there is any resolution for the new version. But in the meantime, I feel very peaceful!

YES! This worked great for me, but remember to turn off automatic updates.... ended up with the new version on my system this morning & had to go re-install Ver. 56 again!

Firefox's style or appearance can be modified by creating a chrome folder inside your Firefox profile folder and then placing a userChrome.css file inside, that includes a custom style rule. The rules you put in the userChrome.css file will override the default styles in Firefox.

Note: Custom style rules might not work every time because of other factors (such as incompatibility with other custom style rules) beyond the Mozilla community's control. Your custom style rule might also stop working each time a new Firefox release comes out.

Here's how to modify Firefox so that tabs are shown below the address (URL) bar instead of at the top (see this help page and our community member's video starting at 8:45 for more detail).

1. Open your currently active profile folder: Type about:support in the Firefox address bar and, under the "Application Basics" section next to "Profile Folder", click Open Folder (Windows) Open Directory (Linux) or Show in Finder (Mac).
2. Create a new folder named chrome inside the profile folder.
   • Create a desktop shortcut to the chrome folder, if you wish, for easier future access.
3. Create a new text file inside the chrome folder and name it userChrome.css (on Windows, make sure that file name extensions are not hidden and that the file is named userChrome.css and not userChrome.css.txt).
4. Go to https://www.userchrome.org/what-is-userchrome-css.html and copy the CSS rules under the "Move the Tab Bar Below the Other Toolbars" example (here).
5. Open the userChrome.css file you created earlier, paste the CSS rules inside the file, close the file and save your changes.
6. Restart Firefox.

Tip: Turn on your title bar, or the menu bar on Windows, after you've made these changes. Other suggestions are included as comments here in the CSS rules you copied.

Alternative solution

(A) You need to create a new chrome folder in your Firefox profile folder. This article has the steps for that (#1, #2, and optionally #3):

(B) Download the following file and move it into that chrome folder:
https://www.userchrome.org/samples/userChrome-tabs_on_bottom.css

(C) Rename the file to just userChrome.css.

The next time you close Firefox and start it up again, it should discover that file and apply the rules.

Tip: Turn on your title bar, or the menu bar on Windows, after you've made these changes. Other suggestions are included as comments in the userChrome-tabs_on_bottom.css file you downloaded and renamed.

I managed to finally figure out that fix last week, but it was a PITA & didn't have a nice clean look... It put my tabs on the bottom, but things weren't quite laid out right & everything looked off. I'll just stick with going back to Ver. 56 for now!!
