I actually found that someone else had this problem and did get an answer (to go to Tools ->Options ->Content the "Load images automatically" is checked, which I couldn't find so couldn't say as she/he did that it is always checked. I think her OS was Windows 7 Home Premium; mine, however, is Windows 10 (don't know if that makes a difference). But then she was told "allow pages to choose their colors and to make certain that "high contrast" in the accessibility settings isn't enabled. Then go to Tools -> Options -> Content;Fonts & Colors: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my options above." So, I couldn't find whether or not "load images automatically" is checked. And, I can't see anything that designates "Tools." Many thanks. (Christine and FunKing and Co-el were names mentioned but this was 2012, which I access by a Google search.

Hi Redclaylady, the Options/Preferences page was reorganized in Firefox 56. Part of what you found is now changed as follows.

In case the problem is how Firefox is adapting to your Windows theme, could you set Firefox to strictly follow page colors:

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

In the search box at the top of the page, type color and Firefox should filter the page down so you can easily find the "Colors" button. Go ahead and click that.

Try changing this setting:

"Override the colors specified by the page with your selections above"

Below that, it usually says

"Only with High Contrast themes"

Click that and change the setting to

"Never"

then click OK to finish the change.

Does that help at all?

Here's a screenshot of that part of the Colors dialog:

the "Load images automatically" setting has been removed from the Firefox user interface in Options/Preferences quite a few years ago. You would have to open the about:config page in current Firefox releases to modify this setting.

If images are missing then check that you do not block images from some domains.

  • you can tap the Alt key or press the F10 key to show the hidden Menu Bar temporarily

check the permissions for the domain in the currently selected tab in "Tools -> Page Info -> Permissions".

Check "Tools -> Page Info -> Media" for blocked images

  • select the first image and use the cursor Down key to scroll through the list
  • if an image in the list is grayed and "Block Images from..." has a checkmark then remove this checkmark to unblock images from this domain

You can check preferences on the about:config page and make sure they have the default value.

  • permissions.default.image (1)
  • network.http.sendRefererHeader (2)

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block (wanted) content (Adblock Plus, NoScript, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block (wanted) content.

  • make sure your extensions and filters are updated to the latest version

There is Tracking Protection that can block (wanted) content.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
