Twice this has happened. I open T-bird and look for my "inbox mail" but instead of latest mail on top the entire list of mail is set up in some sort of alphabetical arrangement. Is somebody getting into my computer? I am the only user.

Not sure how you think anyone here knows who uses your computer. My guess is you accidentally click on one of the column headers and sort on a different column. There is a small pointer placed on the header that is being used for the sort. Clicking any header sorts on that column. Clicking the same header a second time reverses the sort.
