Why is Sync standard 'on'? I'd rather have it standard set to 'off'.

I recently used my older computer for other purposes. I didn't need all my bookmarks that are now copied to my new computer. However, when I cleared up the bookmarks on my old computer, it appeared it has deleted them from my new computer too! I didn't want that and I wasn't aware that these things were synced. Why is that standard set to 'on'? It doesn't make sense. I don't get this 'all you devices synced' fetishism. In fact, it drives me nuts. Please don't tell me Firefox (or Mozilla) is just as pushy as Apple is... So I guess my question is: can it be set to standard 'off' for future mishaps? (not just for me, I'm guessing)

Currently, the only reason to have a Firefox account is to sync devices. while there may be more reasons in the future, that's the only feature of an account right now

Firefox Sync is only turned on if you set it up, it requires a Firefox account and if you don't set one up Sync can't be run

I get that, but why is syncing set to 'on' when you set up a Firefox account? One can have a Firefox account WITHOUT the sync functionality o, isn't it? Otherwise why call it Firefox account? Syncing account would be the more appropriate name if that is only what it is about... Apparently I was triggered to set up a Firefox account for some reason, not aware that this would throw all my devices on one big heep and let me get completely confused (as said, I really don't get this idea of having everything synced all the time).

Ah, so I was lured into setting up an account and I didn't realise fully what it was for. OK, many thanks for clearing that up.
