Must reboot computer for "Get Messages" to work. "Connected" times out.
[Win 7, TB 68.3.1 32bit] Retreiving messages only works following a computer reboot. Simply restarting TB is not sufficient. Pressing "Get Messages" yields "Looking up...", "Connecting..." and "Connected to...", which remains for about 30 seconds, then Times Out. All this started about two weeks ago. No major change in anything, I suspect a state is not releasing...

I suspect the problem will be your anti virus program, but to diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try the following:
- Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.
- Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
- If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

Thanks, Matt. I had tried the No Add-Ons mode prior. No effect. Now it gets interesting... I tried the boot Safe w/Networking, and everything worked as it should. I could "Get Messages" many times in the same TB session. step by step.
So then I booted normally, and... everything still worked properly! Yes, I could now "Get Messages" numerous times in the same TB session.
Perhaps Windows does an SFC-like file check when booting in Safe Mode? I have marked the problem solved, the solution being so obviously intuitive... Thanks again.

had you previously rebooted? Often these sorts of problems are the result of a driver or anti virus failing. It is possible that this is the first "cold" reload a number of applications have had, but particularly the anti virus as it is simply non running in safe mode.
Yes, I had rebooted. Rebooting was the only way I could get TB to Get Messages (one time per reboot). It was when I tried the SAFE with Networking mode you suggested that seems to have fixed the problem (and it still is working). Thanks again.
