How to make bookmarks appear in bookmark bar?

I'm migrating to a new computer and I'm trying to set up Firefox to continue working as it did on my old one. The version is 70.0.1, 64-bit.

I copied my library of bookmarks from the old machine to the new one, and all of them are accessible - except the ones in the bookmark toolbar. There's nothing where the toolbar should be except a single button with the Firefox icon and the label "getting started."

I checked the customization page and confirmed the bookmark toolbar is being displayed. Apparently "Getting Started" is the only bookmark the Firefox knows about.

I tried to define one of the bookmarks that is supposed to be in the toolbar, but could not. Firefox is happy to let me _edit_ it, because it is already defined, and will let me move it to any location except the toolbar, which is where it now is -- except that it isn't. How can I make Firefox display my bookmark toolbar again?

It is possible that these bookmarks are located in another folder. You can check the Bookmarks Menu folder (look for a second Bookmarks Toolbar folder) to see if you see them there or do a search in the Bookmarks Manager (Library) for a known bookmark to verify whether they were importedt or that something went wrong with the import.

If the above doesn't sort it out, could you explain --

I’m not sure I understand the question. I copied it from the old machine to some intermediate space, probably a thumb drive, and from there to the new one. Is that significant?

That seems to be it. There are two Bookmark Toolbar folders: the first contains "Getting Started," and the second contains all of my bookmarks.

I tried to delete the first folder, but Firefox wouldn't let me. I tried to drag the bookmarks from the second folder to the first, but it wouldn't let me do that either. I'll have to click each bookmark then redefine it in the first folder, which seems stupid, but it only has to be done once, so I won't look further.

For bulk moves, the Library window works best. Select all contents, Cut, go to the destination, Paste.

There are three potential ways to do it:

  • replace current Places database with the old one (bookmarks + history)
  • restore an automatic backup
  • import an HTML-format file you exported

Each has its own issues, so that's why I asked which method you used.

The first Bookmarks Toolbar folder is likely the correct root folder. The other Bookmarks Toolbar folder in the Bookmarks Menu folder is a 'ghost' folder that sometimes gets created if you import an HTML backup and the folder isn't recognized as a root folder.

If Cut and Paste doesn't work to get the bookmarks to the real Bookmarks Toolbar folder then try a Copy and Paste instead.
