My windows 10 laptop has been murdered and the only thing that was salvageable was my SSD hard drive. The only spare computer in the house is the house Windows 7 laptop ( I abhor Win 10 ) for general usage. I have transferred thunderbird and firefox over the years and never had a problem. Firefox took the whole of yesterday and today I have thunderbird transferred except for the passwords. In firefox instructions you list what is stored in the profile files. However this is not the case with thunderbird. Although it sounds easy, windows 10 does not want to revert to windows 7. Any ideas

Did you compare all the files in the profile on the SSD with what has been copied to the Win 7 laptop?

Are the Thunderbird versions the same on the broken Win 10 laptop and the Win 7 one? Which version is it. Assuming TB 68.4.2 the for the passwords the files key4.db and logins.json are needed.

Thanks for your reply. TB versions were the same. OK so I don't have a key4.db, but I have now discovered by going to my email server direct that Firefox also stores the passwords, So I am now up and running. This was going to be traumatic as there were something like 10 email addresses, whilst I had my passwords, the rest of the family did not. Thank you for your ideas.

Despite admonition to the contrary, there is nothing wrong with a piece of paper for remembering passwords. It is very unlikely a burglar in your home will be looking for email passwords.
