Have you tried starting Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode then clicking on "Disable all addons"?
No, I didn't try that, but I managed to fix the problem in the end by simply going to the Firefox Application Support folder in the Library and deleting all files that had the same time on it (namely the moment when I downloaded Evernote and tried to restart it).
After I'd done that it opened up fine again and - even more amazingly - the Evernote plug-in still seems to have installed. Though I haven't tried using it yet. The experience has put me off Evernote a little.
