I am running a Dell laptop with Windows XP. Have been using Gmail.com with Firefox for years. Since installing latest Firefox 3 6 12, I can no longer send or reply to my email (gmail) I seem to be receiving receiving okay

Check the pref dom.storage.enabled on the about:config page and make sure that the pref is set to true.
To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.
