I am not a "computer geek" - just an average 82-year-old American. Need an explanation in simple English: Why I cannot download version 4. I check all the boxes, but cannot see any confirmation that program has been successfully downloaded.

You can download the Firefox 4 installer and save the file to the desktop. 

Close Firefox (File > Exit) after the download has finished and start the installation with a double click on the desktop icon of the Firefox 4 installer.

There will be quite a change if you update from Firefox 3.0.3 to Firefox 4, so you may lose some extensions that aren't compatible anymore if you have any extensions installed (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions). Themes always need to be updated.
