Why does firefox use so much memory 175,000 kbs and CPU? 1.2 Ghz Locks up?
IE uses 25,000 kbs and very little CPU.Firefox locks up so bad that I have to close it.If I am watching a video it uses 235,000kbs.I have a Dell Inspiron 6000,1gb memory and 1.2 Ghz CPU. Sometimes I have to shut down my pc because fire fox maxes out my CPU?This happens ALOT.

I have an older computer, with Windows XP and have to watch my memory usage.
I open a new tab periodically, and click on "tools" and clear my cache. I am able to keep several tabs open and even watch videos on Youtube, by doing this.
It only takes a few minutes and rather than have my tower fan run on overtime, I clear the cache often (by using a blank tab).
I also use CCleaner, downloaded it free from Pirifoam and update via Pirifoam, too. Several times during the day, I exit my browser and run CCleaner. It's free and VERY fast. I didn't make any changes to it at all, and have been using it for years. It clears all browsers on your system, all temp docs, history on all, passwords, etc. I love it! My friends use it too, and like me, have been using it for years.
Knock on wood, but I believe the only reason my computer is still up and running fine is due to CCleaner and maintenance by me...i.e. keeping Windows updated, defragging, etc.
Hopes this help you, until you get a "techie" answer to your problem. :)

I've read by many, that buying extra memory is cheap..only around $22. I haven't done it yet, but plan to next week. I'm not very hardware knowledgeable, but can work my way around the computer.
I'm hoping that the way to add the memory is via my ubs port and a plug in download.
Also, I upgraded to Foxfire 7.01, it addresses many of problems that occurred with 7.0...one of which is the high memory usage problem. 7.01 uses less memory. I've tried Chrome and it's HUGE. IE has too many security problems, plus I've found that Foxfire 7.01 and my Explorer use about the same amount of memory. I like it.
Good luck!

You will need to find out what type and what the maximum amount of memory your system will take. Before you purchase anything. If you are using a laptop ...the memory will be under a small panel on the bottom, just unplug the power supply ,remove the battery, remove the screws holding the panel, you will see the sticks .A Desk top ? you will need to open the case and the memory will be on the Mother Board.Either case there are plastic clips at the ends of each stick of memory, just open the clips .Be sure to put new sticks in the same way the old ones come out.
Thanks for the advice! I am TERRIFIED of working on my tower, though! lol
I'll check as to how much my system can take and make calls to find who carries it locally (hate to buy things online). I'm hoping the memory stick comes with directions...as the hardware aspect terrifies me.
On to new horizons for me, I guess, eh? Thanks again!
