I guess this is a "settings" question. I have tried all of the fixes you suggest to get rid of the "Firefox Was Recently Updated" window popping up as my home page. Anything else to try.

My normal home page no longer comes up when I start browsing. Your introductory page comes up and stays up, along with asking me a question about allowing information gathering.

That probably won't help if you have other software running that is protecting the file(s) in the Firefox Profile Folder.

Which security software (firewall, anti-virus) do you have?
Does it have any virtualization or sandbox features?

You can try to boot windows in Save mode (F8 on boot screen) to see if that makes it possible to remove the file.

You can also try a new profile to see if that works.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Hi GeneArmstrong,

You should look at this article about that specific issue and the article Preferences not saved. These should give you all the information you need!

If that doesn't work:

  1. Type about:config in the address bar
  2. Click I'll be careful, I promise if prompted
  3. In the Filter input field type startup
  4. Double click on startup.homepage_override_url
  5. Delete the text string and click OK
  6. Close Firefox and reopen the window to verify that it has worked.

Hopefully this helps!

Matt_G,

First of all I appreciate your help. Unfortunately, none of the suggestions resolved the problem. when I open Firefox, two tabs open. The one which displays is the "welcoming" screen about just having updated. The second one is my home page. I then close the welcoming screen and go on. Would blowing away and reinstalling Firefox help?

Did you delete the file prefs.js in the Firefox Profile Folder?

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder

What is the home page setting?

Cor-el,

I found prefs.js when trying another solution that said to rename it. When I tried to do that and when I later tried to delete it, I got a message saying that I could not because it was in use by another person or program. I had no other programs running at the time, which I checked using Task Manager.

My home page setting is the Comcast Opening screen which is what I want.

Cor-el,

I booted in safe mode and was able to go in and blow away "prefs". I no longer get the "welcoming" screen. Not sure what else I lost, but I don't think anything serious. Thanks much for the help.
