I went into:

about:config created a new string: browser.download.dir set the value to: /mnt/extSdCard/Downloads/

Restarted Firefox

But still the downloads go into the sdcard/downloads

This is known. The download folder is /sdcard/downloads/ there is not currently a way to alter that.
