Can one open a suspicious email in a 'sandbox' environment to allow further study wihtout compromising the computer/device?
I am receiving increasingly sophisticated attempts to compromise my devices, as are many other people. The ability to see the email contents and addressees without actually opening the email, or activating any payload, would be most useful.

Thunderbird doesn't run scripts. Executables run only when you click them. I think the biggest risk you face are web bugs, and you can defeat them by disabling HTML, or reading messages offline.
I know I have run a browser in a stand-alone sandbox (sandboxie?) and I'd guess you can do the same with an email client. If you do try this, let us know if or when it traps any furtive behaviour.

In the last three months the sophistication of malicious sp*m has improved dramatically so I don't think I'll be the last asking about this!
