When I empty the trash I get a confirmation dialog, and a sound is played. How do I switch off that sound?

I am not sure how you got it to play a sound in the first place. None of the versions of Thunderbird that I have used ever made a sound on the emptying of the trash. I do seem to remember a dialog box appearing way back when but it had a check box to Not Ask Again.

Do you have some add on installed that is doing this? Restart with add ons disabled and see if it changes. You can do this from the Help menu.

I get the pop-up, which makes the sound. I can check "don't show this again", but I do want the pop-up to show. I just don't want it to play a sound.

I went into config editor and turned the confirm dialog box for trash empty back on and still no sound. I have no idea where you are getting a sound from.

You are on an Apple and I use windows. Maybe it is an "I" thing of some kind."

Hoi Christine,

It's an honour to help you ;)

I'm suspecting this to come from your OS, not from Thunderbird. Although I don't have Ubuntu running here, I understand that you can find the sound integration under system settings, sound, sound effects.

Could you please check if this helps you into the right direction? Otherwise we'll need to dig up an Ubuntu system - in that case please tell me the version and if you are using the default window manager, or something different.
