Just launched Thunderbird and it started deleting all my messages - had to shut it down. not sure what to do next.

opened up Thunderbird to check e-mail and it started automatically starting deleting my e-mails (without any prompting from me) closed the application and restarted, went to the deleted messages to retrieve them and the application started erasing the deleted messages, could not shut down the application had to go to task manager to shut it down.... please advise!
