Some web links are coded to open in a new window, and by default, Firefox switches them to a new tab. To have them open in a separate window, switch the first setting here:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Tabs

Uncheck Open new windows in a new tab instead

Is that what you meant?
